Hardwood flooring adds warmth, charm, and value to your home. But choosing one that fits your style, needs, and budget takes a little research, and help from the pros! At Royal Flooring, we walk our customers through a few simple steps that help us determine the perfect product.
Here you’ll consider whether solid hardwood flooring or engineered wood flooring suits your needs. For most of our customers, engineered hardwood is the best bet. Engineered wood provides the look and feel of solid, but with more moisture protection and added stability. Engineered hardwood is made with multiple layers of pile wood, often referred to as the core board, and finished with a veneer of real hardwood on top. Solid wood floors are planks made from a single wood species with tongue and groove edges. Solid wood is more expensive than engineered wood, but can last longer than engineered wood if cared for appropriately.
The type of wood you choose makes an impact on both performance and aesthetics. The most popular types include: oak, maple, beech, cherry, hickory, and walnut. Based on today’s flooring trends, our interior designer, Lynsy, tends to choose red and white oak wood species. “The oak species has such beautiful natural variation in both grain pattern and color. It’s incredibly versatile and durable—two things I look for when designing spaces for my clients.”
The type of hardwood flooring you choose can vary in width and thickness. If you choose a strip style, the hardwood strip will be anywhere from 1 1/2” to 2 1/2” and have a thickness of 5/16” to ¾”. Strip flooring gives a more traditional look that suits Victorian and Colonial style homes. For a rustic or farmhouse look, our designer recommends choosing a plank style flooring. Plank styles are wider than strip flooring and can be anywhere from 3” to 8” wide.
Once we’ve settled on your preferred construction, wood species, and sizing of wood flooring, we’ll move on to the fun part—choosing the specific brand and product! And if there’s one brand we trust and stand by, it’s Shaw Floors. Shaw has a collection of premium, real wood flooring called The Gallery—which is currently a Royal Deal in our showroom!
The Gallery includes five engineered hardwood floors in more than a dozen color options. Each style is constructed of white oak and features stunning grain patterns and natural knots. This collection also offers six different transition trim pieces, including: flush reducer, flush stairnose, overlap reducer, overlap stairnose, quarter round, and t-molding. Our designer’s favorite selections from this collection include Expression in Melody, Empire Oak Herringbone in Roosevelt, and Castlewood Oak in Palisade.
